Access to anti-addiction and anti-overdose drugs has improved a year into the program.
Secretary Xavier Becerra marked the one-year anniversary of the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Overdose Prevention Strategy by sharing the progress the strategy made to address opioid overdoses in the United States. Buprenorphine, an anti-addiction opioid, and naloxone, a lifesaving anti-overdose drug, are tools used to address opioid addiction but are not widely accessible through most healthcare facilities.
After one year of implementing the Overdose Prevention Strategy, overall access to buprenorphine has increased by 19 percent, and access to naloxone has increased by 37 percent.
“We didn’t get here by accident,” Secretary Becerra said. “Thanks to decades of work by advocates – coupled with an unparalleled people-first strategy and unprecedented investment by the Biden-Harris Administration – we have made a great deal of progress.”
